Parag Khanna - Senior Research Fellow at the New America Foundation - presented his new book "How to Run the World" at a GIGA-Seminar
March 1, 2011:
Prof Alcides Costa Vaz (University of Brasilia) held a Master Class at the HIGS and gave a public lecture on "Brazil's Strategy in Global Security Affairs" on 1 March.
November 22, 2010
The executive board named Sebastian Elischer (GIGA) as new interim coordinator of the HIGS. He assumed this position from Dr Miriam Prys who became head of GIGA research programme 4 'Power, Norms and Governance in International Relations'.
November 8-12, 2010:
Prof Xia Liping, Professor of Political Science & International Relations at the Tongji University in Shanghai, was a visiting scholar at the GIGA Institute of Asian Studies and held a Master Class at the HIGS.
November 4-5, 2010:
Prof Amitav Acharya (American University, Washington, D.C.) was a guest at the HIGS. He held a Master Class with our Ph.D. students on the 4 November and gave a public lecture on the topic of "From the Poor South to the Power South: Emerging Powers and Global Governance" on the 5 November.
October 21, 2010:

October 19, 2010:
The executive board officially named Dr Patrick Köllner as interim academic director for the HIGS until the appointment of a new academic director.
October 11, 2010:
Prof Jeffrey Legro (University of Virginia) was a guest at the HIGS and gave a public lecture on the topic of "Explaining Change in International Politics: The Puzzling Rise and Demise of Unipolarity". In addition, on 12 October he held a Master Class with four of our Ph.D. students.
October 1, 2010:
HIGS Director appointed professor of international relations at the University of Kiel:
Dr Dirk Nabers assumed in October 2010 a professorship for international politics and society at the Institute of Social Sciences,Christian Albrechts University Kiel, Germany. Dr Nabers had been since 2000 a senior research fellow at the GIGA Institute of Asian Studies. In 2009 he also became head of GIGA research programme 4 'Power, Norms and Governance in International Relations' as well as academic director of the Hamburg International Graduate School for the Study of Regional Powers. Professor Nabers will remain affiliated with GIGA as an associate senior research fellow.
May 25, 2010:
Prof Robert G. Patman (University of Otago) was a guest at the HIGS and gave a public lecture on the topic of "Strategic Shortfall: The
Somalia Syndrome and the March to 9/11". In addition, he hold a Master Class with our Ph.D. students.
May 1, 2010: Dr. Jörg Meyer is New Coordinator
The German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) would like to thank Dr. Stephan Hensell, who recently left to work at the University of Hamburg Research Centre.
In his place, the GIGA welcomes Dr. Jörg Meyer as the new coordinator. He took office on May 1 and is continuing with the work that was previously done by Dr. Hensell.

The Hamburg International Graduate School for the Study of Regional Powers (HIGS) would like to thank all the guest speakers who participated in the school's opening ceremony, including Prof. Dr. Robert Kappel (GIGA President), Dr. Herlind Gundelach (Senator of Science and Research, Hamburg), Dr. Wilhelm Krull (General Secretary of the Volkswagen Foundation), Cornelia Pieper (Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office), Prof. Dr. Dieter Lenzen (President of the University of Hamburg), Prof. Dr. Cord Jakobeit (Department of International Politics at the University of Hamburg). We would particularly like to thank Prof. Dr. Andrew Hurrell (University of Oxford) and Prof. Dr. Karoline Postel-Vinay (CERI-Sciences Po, Paris) and of course all who attended this successful celebration.
